Ojibwe

Ojibwe (pronounced "oh-jib-way") is a tribe located in both the United States and Canada, mostly around the Great Lakes area. Also known as Chippewa, Ojibwa, Ojibway, Ojibewa, Saulteaux, and a few other wierd ways of spelling it. A lot of us prefer to be called Anishinabe (pronounced "a-nish-shin-nah-bay") which in the language means "first people". Ojibwe are the third largest tribe in North America (the first is Cherokee, second is Navajo.) "Ojibwe" is actually an Algonquin word that refers to our uniquely made moccasins. We are closely related to the Odawa and the Potawatomi (this created an alliance called the Council of Three Fires). The Ojibwe are known for their birch bark canoes, delicately made moccasins, wild rice, use of seashells, snowshoes, strong medicine, most of our reserves are on/near original land because we resisted being deported, and the fact that we were the only tribe to defeat both the Sioux (Dakota, Nakota, Lakota) and the Iroquois (Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, Tuscarora). But now we can consider them all like friends!

-I love fire, but I'm not crazy.
-I can be very, very territorial.
-I refer to friends as "cousins" instead. And my real cousin is a "brother/sister".
-Me, I'm Ojibwe. To my fellow tribe members: Know your history, and be strong.

Ten Wheel Drive

An awesome band that was active between 1968 and 1974. Ten Wheel Drive was formed in New Jersey by Genya Ravan, Aram Schefrin, and Michael Zager. They released four albums, which are worth finding if you don't have them. Check out a vintage record shop or iTunes... trust me. Ten Wheel Drive nicely blends jazz, blues, soul, and good old rock. Ten Wheel drive is not to be missed!!!

Hey baby, put on that Ten Wheel Drive song for me.

wepa

A nice little word used by puerto ricans, and a few other cool people (just sometimes, it really depends). It can be used like "Oh yeah!" "Cool!" or "Go for it!" ect.

"Woo hoo! Alright! Wepa!"

Nish

"Nish" comes from Anishinaabe, the tribe more widely known as the Ojibwe. "Nish" is used among friends and family, or even a complete stranger (as long as they're a Nish, too). Always used on friendly terms. It could be an insult if used in the wrong way, but why would you want to do that?

"Look at that big Nish! Right over there!" - nish #1
"Howah! He must have a huge nishnob!" - nish #2
"Sha hi!!!!!! You're so sick minded, cousin! Ayaa, but he is sexy..." - nish #3

native american

The once peaceful people who live in what is now North, Central, and South America. But since the Europeans came over the ocean, everything has changed, no shit. The Spanish and Africans (slaves) blended with many of the southern natives who weren't dead yet. Some natives retreated far into the mountains and forests (and saved their languages and cultures) so in a way, they were luckier than the northern natives. As for them, they were nearly fucking exterminated (again through diseases, poverty, and murders). 95% of natives were killed by the mid 1800's. And it didn't help when they were "removed" by the people who believed in Manifest Destiny, forced onto reservations (might as well be concentration camps), forbidden to practice traditions and speak their languages, and converted to Catholicism.
Here's a some random things people should know:
1. DON'T compare our suffering to other peoples' (like the Africans and Jewish people). What, is there a contest?
2. It's safe to say that we LOVE to dance and sing. And have sexual relations. Some more obvious than others.
3. Not all of us are fucking alcoholics. And only a SMALL percentage of reservations own casinos, which they pay hard worked CA$H for.
4. Every tribe is DIFFERENT.
5. Not all of us are bitter for what happened. After all, many of us are blended with other nationalities (like latinos/metizos, metis and griffes... many more!)
6. We're NOT Asian descendents. Just because we didn't leave things out to rot, and now archeaologists are getting bored, doesn't mean we came from fucking Asia. No disrespect to Asia though. We were created here. Understand?
7. We're protective of our families and friends. If you want one, you'll have the whole clan on your ass!
8. Our southern cousins below the border are NOT "illegals", they were here too, but they often get overlooked. We feel you.
9. It's fucking rude to dress your kids up and "indians" for Halloween. Red makeup, fake leather outfit, and feathers... And I ain't about to hit a child.
10. To my fellow native americans: Be strong, yes, just that!!!!!

Sha hi, those native americans have a wierd sense of humor...

taino

The indigenous people who inhabited the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles islands like Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, and Jamaica before Christopher Columbus and his crew ever set foot there. When they did, there were five large Taino territories. The Tainos were almost destroyed by the 18th century (from introduced diseases, and forced assimilation into the plantation economy that Spain imposed, with subsequent importation of African slaves. Also, the Spanish did not bring women with them, so many took Taino wives, and had metizo children.)
But this doesn't mean there aren't any Tainos left. There are. Most are mixed with Black and European (mostly Spanish) ancestry, but only a handful of full blooded Tainos live on.

"Taino" originally means "friendly people" in the Arawakan language.
