oekaki

Oekaki is a style of digital art that uses a limited color palette and low resolution. It is similar to, but distinct from, pixel art. Unlike pixel art, oekaki eschews emphasis on single-pixel details. Instead, oekaki commonly features a rougher and more painterly style.

Sometimes, the term is used derogatively to state that a work, although adhering to the technical limitations of pixel art, has not been created in the pixel art style.

The term is derived from Oekaki Boards, internet sites where this style of art was commonly created and shared. Oekaki comes from the Japanese お絵かき, meaning "drawing."

Pixel art requires the careful placement and manipulation of each and every pixel, when drawing oekaki, you don't have that control.
