gift-tag

When a person gives an unexpected gift so the following year the receiver gives a gift, yet receives none, so the following year the original giver gives a gift yet receives none, and so on.

Alison felt embarrassed when Nicole gave her a Christmas gift and she had bought her nothing so the following Christmas she bought Nicole a gift, who had bought nothing for Alison. They were caught in a cycle of gift-tag.
