Sindar

1) In Tolkien's works, the Sindar are the "grey elves". They were originally part of the Teleri, one of the three clans who went west, but they followed Elwe, who found the Maia Melian in the woods of Doriath and who remained in Middle-Earth. The Sindar were the only elves in Middle-Earth until the Noldor returned, and were relatives of the Teleri killed in the Kinslaying; their relations with the Noldor were therefore strained.

2) In Suikoden, a long-lost race who (according to Richmond the private eye) came down from the north, crossed the whole of the world - leaving ruins wherever they went - and then mysteriously disappeared. The ruins are monster-infested but also contain powerful and dangerous magic treasures. The Sindar also left behind ancient texts which appear in Suikoden II as valuable antiques. Several characters, such as Lorelai and Killey, are seeking the Sindar.

In both cases, the Sindar are an elusive and mysterious people.

Maglor

Second-eldest of the sons of Feanor, usually listed along with Maedhros in the text. Portrayed as doughty and strong, a great leader, but has little independent role in the book he appears in, Tolkien's Silmarillion.

One of the last two survivors from among the sons of Feanor, he like Maedhros ended up with a Silmaril, but apparently he threw it in the sea, and then wandered the shores singing mournfully.

Like Maedhros, he fought in the battles against Morgoth, and against Elwing's forces, but was not part of the abduction of Luthien and was not captured by Morgoth.

Balar

Island on the western coast of Beleriand, near to the coast of Arvernien. It was safe from the forces of Morgoth, who had few ships and could not take on the navies of the Teleri. As a result, it became a haven for elves after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and especially the fall of Vinyamar and Eglarest, when Cirdan used his ships to transport survivors to the island.

It features in Tolkien's book, The Silmarillion.

It was located in the Bay of Balar. There may be an etymological link between Balar and Beleriand.

Ent

Tree-creature in Lord of the Rings. Ents are tall, slow and patient creatures which live in the forest of Fangorn and exist to protect the trees from harm. Related to Entwife. Make for very cool special effects in films, especially when it comes to trashing Isengard.

That tree's got a face - it looks just like an ent.

You need the patience of an ent to put up with this degree course.

Tony Blair's revived the road building programme! I hope an ent squashes him.
