Cross between shocked & shaken.
Origin: In November 2002, DFM (female) had a trip to Australia. Later that month she rang her best friend, GGK (also female) to say she was engaged to a guy she just met (Me!). At the wedding banquet in May 2003, GGK was so nervous during her speech she said that when DFM rang her about the engagement, she was SHOCKEN (meant to say shocked & shaken!). The word caught on in our circles and is now a regular word used in our speech!
When my best friend went overseas and rang me a couple of weeks later she was engaged to a guy she had just met, I was SHOCKEN.

Literally: grab for newly available land.
Figuratively: grab for control over anything not yet controlled.
Expression originated in 19th Century when West was available for anyone who wanted to claim land and settle on it.
Israel is being accused of a 'land grab' (Search for 'land grab' and Israel on Google Advanced).
Then it was used regarding those wanting to control airwaves and recently for those wanting to control Cyberspace.
