Root

(n) (Austr./New Z.): Antipodean utility swear-word which fulfils a role similar to that of fuck but isn't quite so naughty - you could almost get away with it in front of your maiden aunt.

Whilst its original literal meaning was verbal - "to have sexual intercourse" - the adjectival usage rooted - meaning to be broken or tired out (equivalent to knackered, fucked, and buggered) is more the predominant one.

Often used with reference to, for example, the gearbox of an HQ Holden which has started smelling interesting towing a trailer up a hill.

Col, I think you've rooted the clutch, bro.

grundies

(Australian): Underpants.

Derives from Sydney Rhyming slang, "Reg Grundies = Undies", which is a reference to that excellent Australian TV production outfit Reg Grundy, behind such televisual classics as Neighbours, Home and Away, The Sullivans, etc.

From "The 12th Man Again", wherein commentator Max "Tangles" Walker discusses the perils of prolonged bouts of commentating on international cricket competitions:

"when you're sitting around in the commentary box for this length of time, it's not unusual, really, for the old cods to maybe nod off, get a bit numb; I think the best thing to do in situations like this is to get up, stretch the old legs; maybe even try to casually slip the old hand down and, maybe, give them a bit of a rub; probably try and adjust the old reg grundies while you're down there; try and loosen them up a bit. Anything, really, to try to get the old circulation going again."

Tron Bonkers

An obsession bordering on the compulsive about the movie Tron: Legacy.

Usually manifests itself in eight-year-old boys who, upon infection, will dress in black, sellotaping strips of paper to their arms and legs, cutting out cardboard discs (the same size as we used to use to make large pom poms in the olden days) and marching round the house with serious aspect at all times.

Early signs of contagion include discovering all your YouTube recommendations (based on previous searches) being related to Tron, younger siblings insisting without prompting that they are in fact not Mabel, as you previously thought (having named them that) but in fact QUORRA, and snippings of cardboard (offcuts from home-made identity discs) strewn about the floor.

You are in the full grip of the disease when your offstpring shrieks "I AM NOT CLU! I AM KEVIN!" at you when you try to enter into the spirit of things by entering the youngster's imagination games - always a mistake, as older parents will unstintingly tell you.

Alfie swore black and blue he was an expert lightcycle rider the other day. He's gone completely Tron Bonkers. I think he's infected Mabel too. He has convinced her she's an Isomorphic Algorithm.
