In the 19th century germans had given the name Kanake for southlanders (arabs, turks, the rest of the middle east and south europe). It was originally a slur to discriminate southlanders. Since around the 1990s southlanders in Germany are using the word Kanake/Kanacke (or in short Kenek) to identify themselves similar like black people in america with the N-word.
