"Homer" is a play on the word "homo". Homer is way for straight people to clue each other in, and identify, that a certain person, within earshot, is gay.
Coined in Hollywood make-up FX shops in the 80's.
Here is an example how the word "homer" would be used.
Two make-up FX guys are standing in line at a fast food restaurant. All of a sudden, on of them notices that the guy in front of them is likely gay. He looks his co-worker in the eye, looks at the gay guy, and then back at his friend. Then this conversation takes place:
Make-up FX Artist #1: Homer.
Make-up FX Artist #2: Yep.
