MLM

Abbreviation for Multi-Level Marketing, a business model in which marketers are paid commissions on the sales of other marketers that they recruit, as well as on their own sales. To qualify as MLM, the business plan must actually focus upon selling a marketable product or service.

Business and marketing n00bs frequently confuse MLM with pyramid schemes, a business model that focuses on paying bonuses for recruiting people, rather than commissions on sales, because the criminals who start pyramid schemes like to scam n00bs and flatter themselves by calling their schemes MLM. They may even pretend to operate an MLM business by forcing marketers to stockpile unmarketable products to pretend they are selling it.

Anyone who calls a pyramid scheme MLM helps the scammers trick their victims.

Crescent City

The most northern harbor on the coast of California. Also, one of the most low-lying and smallest county seats in the state, the seat of Del Norte County. It holds the questionable distinctions of suffering more from tsunami than any other city in the 48 contiguous United States and being the locale of Pelican Bay.

Crescent City has a commercial fishing harbor, but not much of a shipping port.

sandbox

A probationary period for web sites that begins after they are first spidered by search engines. The best-known sandbox is Google's.

Other industries are also beginning to describe probationary periods as sandboxes too.

Your site ranks well in MSN already, but Google put you in the sandbox. Be sure to play nice.

clickity claque

An SEO spam technique meant to railroad search engines into thinking that a web site is popular by artifically inflating apparent traffic to the site by repeatedly visiting one's own site with a search engine's search bar installed. Generally used by SEO-inept web marketers who are too lame to legitimately optimize their sites for search engines.

From the French, claque, meaning, "an organized group of supporters at a theatrical event who try to prompt positive audience response by clapping enthusiastically". Also a play on the traditional American English rendering of the sound made by a train traveling on a railroad, clickity-clack.

Some SEO spammers are such duh-weebs that after they get their sites banned from Google for keyword stuffing, doorway pages, and link farming, that they think they can still increase their PR, so they download Googlebar and play clickity claque.
