Confederate flag bikini

An extremely provocative swim suit, both because of its brevity and its political subtext, based on the pattern of the Confederate Battle Flag. For example, depending on the wearer, it may be worn as a sexy yet ironic statement about the fabled Lost Cause, or as a literal affirmation of the wearer's Southern heritage. Obviously, the implicit message is necessarily subjective.

Its first known manifestation was one worn by Bridget Fonda in "Shag: The Movie." While some Southerners were offended by it, Southern sociologist and chronicler John Shelton Reed pronounced it to be "fetching."

The Confederate flag bikini is a crowd-pleaser among the NASCAR set.

Scottish play

This is a periphrastic way of referring to William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth," a device sometimes used by actors to avoid referring to the play by name, because of the supposed bad luck that it might bring if it is referred to by name. Likewise, the protagonist and his wife are referred to as"Mr. and Mrs. M."

The Village Players led off this year's season with the Scottish play.

Perky effect

The Perky effect, in psychology, refers to the process by which visual mental imagery is thought to interefere with visual perception. For example, if a person is instructed to project by imagination a tomato or a banana on a while screen, an a faint image of a tomato or banana is projected, the person may not be able to tell the difference between the real image and that which was imagined. Cheves W. Perky did the pioneering research on this back in 1910. This is the first meaning of the Perky effect.

There is another meaning: the Perky effect is what happens when you go braless on a cold day.

Thomasina loved cold days because of the perky effect.

passez

A teasing 'game' or activity in which two or more people collaborate to seize someone's possession, tossing it to each other to prevent the owner from getting it back. This 'game' has been played for generations in New Orleans and is pronunced 'pos-say.'

Heather and Robert ripped off my bikini top and tossed it back and forth, saying "passez" with each toss.

lateral cleavage

Lateral cleavage refers to the display of a woman's breasts from the side; a term more polite than sideboob.

While my prom dress did have a little lateral cleavage, it was still okay since I used dressmakers' tape to keep the nipples from being exposed.
