Derealization

A state in which somebody is heavily convinced that their experience or current life is a dream or nightmare that they are forced to stay in. This strong delusion is usually caused by mental illness and triggered by mental illness or conspiracy. One can easily be convinced they are living a bad dream and hardly convinced that they are in real life and awake. These can last in episodes or long periods of time.

“I have accepted that my current life is a bad dream that i can’t wake up from unless i destruct myself. My legitimate body is probably in a coma somewhere. They say it is a case of derealization”*

*(example of defined delusion, if self-destruction is on your mind, reach out to a loved one or hotline as soon as possible.)

Age regression

Age regression is when someone has the mentality of a younger age than their genuine age. This could happen involuntary due to (childhood) trauma and/or a brain injury/damage. Or voluntary as a coping mechanism and way of relaxation. Common signs in kids include a little-age between 1 and 3, thumb sucking, crawling, etc. Common signs in teens include a little-age of 1-12, gibberish or pitched voice, sensitiveness, interest for things meant for kids, etc. Common signs in adults could include a little-age of 1-20, any of the called symptoms depending on age, etc. Adults could also be regressed back to their teenage years instead of their childhood. The younger someone’s mentality is drifted, the more they are in need of a caregiver (to be taken care of).

“Tommy is five, why is he still sucking his thumb?”
“His parents are divorced. He is acting like a baby because it has put a lot of stress on him.”

“Why does that boy act so childish?”
“He has the mentality of an 11 year old due to childhood trauma, because he got bullied in his past. It is called age regression, he is basically regressing.”

anisocoria

A condition where someone’s pupils are not the same size. It can be caused by abnormal brain activities (often severe difference in size), a reaction to eye injury or a harmless sign of an unsymmetrical body (which is often more common than a symmetrical body. Anisocoria due to this cause is often only a small difference that can go unnoticed.)

If you have a big and easily noticable difference in your two pupils and do not remember having an eye injury, make sure to visit a doctor or other professional.

“Why is your left pupil bigger than your right pupil?”
“I have anisocoria”

Alice in wonderland syndrom

Alice in wonderland syndrome (AIWS/AWS), also called Todd syndrome is a neurological and harmless syndrome where someone’s surroundings are distorted and people and/or objects might be hallucinated smaller (micropsia), bigger (macropsia), further away (teleopsia) or closer (pelopsia). These episodes usually last 10-20 minutes and can be triggered by migraines, nervousness, specific lighting and fevers. Side symptoms during an episode (can) include dizzyness, sensory hallucinations, body dysmorphia in limbs, difficulty to focus and relax your eyes and losing sense of time. Alice in wonderland is not easily diagnosed due to the fact many cases happen to be in children, who are usually too afraid to tell a parent/adult or aren’t understood when describing their hallucinations. Most children grow out of their Alice in wonderland syndrome at the end of their childhood.

“Did you ever see objects in your room shrink for a while when you were a kid?”
“Yes, it is called Alice in wonderland syndrome”
“Oh, how come its called that?”
“Because it refers to Alice’s body shrinking and growing abnormally in the story, but another name for the condition is Todd syndrome”
“And why’s that?”
“Because someone named Todd was the first person to elaborate his experience with the syndrome.”
