Emo doesn't mean a trend where people where tight pants, or listen to sad or depressing music. It also doesn't mean an angsty or up-tight person. It isn't a fad, it's a word.
Emo isn't a word to describe someone who cuts themselves, it's someone who is "EMOTIONAL". Doesn't mean that they are going to kill themselves or they are gay, it means they express their emotions outloud. It doesn't mean they walk around with their friends and call themselves emo. Those people aren't emo, they are trying to be part of the scene.

That boy just shared his emotions with me, and told me in a direct fashion, he can be considered emo. (Correct)

He cuts himself, he must be emo. (Incorrect)
He cuts himself, he must be depressed/trying to act cool.(scene)
