elevator shift

The involuntary or voluntary movement from one area inside an elevator to another due to the increase in available space created by the exiting of another individual. This occurs more often when the exiting individual is a complete stranger, as the shift aids in alleviating the stress induced by the awkward elevator ride.

Example Situation:

You enter an elevator containing one other person situated toward the right wall. You make your way to the back left corner, not wanting to stand too close. On the way up to your floor, the other person exits the elevator, and you move towards the center. You then come to the realization that you have performed an elevator shift.
