flip flop

Slang for a terrorist. The term originates in the southern Africa bush wars of the sixties and seventies, especially those of Rhodesia and Mozambique.

The flip flop refers to the effect of the 7.62mm NATO round, usually fired from a FN FAL rifle, striking a terrorist and the body jerking back and forth from the bullets impact force.

See the Nick Downie Granada TV documentary, of the time, on the Rhodesian bush war which shows the flip flop effect in actual combat footage.
