A conjunction of the two Greek words:
Homo - meaning âthe sameâ
(as opposed to hetero - meaning âdifferentâ)
In this context it is an abbreviation of homosexual (one who is attracted to another of the same sex).
And Phobos - the personification of Fear in Greek mythology. In English a âphobiaâ has come to mean an irrational fear or aversion.
It therefore is used to describe anything opposed to same-sex coupling.
