The top definition is misleading. It doesn't even acknowledge the fact that this is the Chinese character for grass, regardless what the Japanese variant means. The Pinyin for è is "cao", and it is pronounced in English as "ts-aw-oh". When you see è, you better think of grass.

Some people may say "his/her" instead of "their" as that's what they're used to, just like how some people may choose to say "buy" instead of "purchase". And that's A-okay.
And to be fair, this is mostly used in more formal speech or text, such as an essay or a legislative document. Obviously you're not gonna say this in casual dialogue (again, no problems if you choose to do so).
