Imam Ali

Ali Ibn Abi Talib is the cousin-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. For Shia Muslims, he is the first rightful successor to leadership the Muslim community after Muhammad, and he is the first Imam, Imam Ali.

Jafari Shia and many Ismaili Shia believe he is infallible. Most Zaydi Shia Muslims don't believe the imams were infallible, however there are some exceptions such as the Aliyites and some mystical Zaydi groups in Germany and Iran.

Imam Ali is given divine attributes by some Shiite Muslims such as Alevis, Alawites, and Aliyites. This includes the names of Imam Ali, Arabic names that translate to things like:
Door of God
Hand of God
Soul of God
Eye of God
Face of God
Word of God
Light of God
Sword of God
Etc.

Imam Ali is important for Shia Muslims and for many Sunni Muslims too.
