shelter-in-place-ionship

A strenuous test of a couple's compatibility.

Forbidden to leave the house, they had shared every meal, slept, worked, read, watched videos and exercised side-by-side, hour after hour, every night and day for a very long time, and yet they were actually having a good time. She felt that if they survived this shelter-in-place-ionship they could survive anything.

humility

Human utility. A lack of arrogance and entitlement.

Who we were on the planet, and who we might become if we survived, was a question best faced with humility. Maybe our purpose was to serve other life, the animals and the trees, and to let go the notion that the earth and its creatures exist to serve humanity.

mentia

The inverse of dementia. A state of mental incline rather than decline. Having not only all one's marbles but too many.

He could remember every almost word he had ever read, could recount conversations verbatim from several decades earlier, knew the names of minor characters, and the actors who had played them, in movies he had never seen. He could remember the name of a person he had met in passing many years ago, while some of his contemporaries searched for the names of their nearest and dearest. The diagnosis was direct: He was suffering from early onset mentia.

air travel

Once a futuristic fantasy, soon a fairy tale of the magical past.

"Once upon a time, in the olden days, people would get into a metal tube, which would rise up in the sky, and when they got out of it, a little while later, they were in a completely different part of the world."

Yes, sweetheart, it's really true. It was called "air travel". Now, as soon as Daddy closes your door, take off your mask, close your eyes, and have sweet dreams.

Facial Recognition

1) A technology rendered obsolete by Covid.
2) A quaint human interaction, from the time when people could see another person's face, know whom they were looking at, and respond with feeling.

He saw a sort of female person standing in front of him. She had her ear pods in and was speaking to someone who was not there. She was wearing a mask, as required by law and by custom, large sunglasses and a hat. He saw a small patch of skin - her cheeks - and longing for that old feeling once termed facial recognition, he believed it might or might not be Sarah.
