It is a term of endearment and pride for the culture they all share.
If you are born in USA with Filipino heritage a Pinoy will not refer to you as a Pinoy.
Pinoys will call a person of Filipino heritage who was born and raised in the United States a Filipino-american or just an American.
Example: I love going to visit my Pinoy friends on the weekends, to eat dinner and sing karaoke.
Example: Pinoys love the American government , because they helped liberate the Philippine Islands from the Japanese invasion during World War Ii, and many Filipinos who helped the Americans during the war, were awarded U.S. citizenship by the American government.

Example: My friend Marco is from Mandaluyong and he told me each of his kids had their own YaYa when they were growing up.
Example: I asked Marco what does a YaYa do, and he said a YaYa is the name for a Nanny in the Filipino national language of Tagalog.
