Poke and Grit

A southern-slang term meaning "poke your tongue in your cheek and grit your teeth" or "bite your tongue". Most often used as a way of saying there's no food.

"The fridge is empty, looks like we're having poke and grit."

"If you don't like what I cooked, you can have poke and grit"
