She is a white, middle-class, married woman who usually lives in the suburbs, works outside the home and drives a minivan or sports-utility vehicle. The term began to take on its demographic meaning in 1995 during an election for Denver city council, when Susan B. Casey ran with the slogan 'A Soccer Mom for City Council'. Ms Casey having a PhD used the slogan as way of assuring voters they could trust her to be 'just like them'.
