Sutter Cut

Noun

A unique hand gesture similar to waving, where the back of the hand faces the recipient, and quick up-and-down wiping motions are made.

Background: Legend has it that the Sutter Cut originated with Richard McVey, who was seen using this motion to clear fog off his driver window while driving. Someone mistook it for a new way of waving, and the gesture spread from there.

Example: "When I saw Jake across the street, I gave ol' bubs a Sutter Cut instead of a regular wave."
