A term used to define moonshine during the days of prohibition. Moonshiners would stash their whiskey in tree stumps. This kept it safely hidden from the long arm of the law. These days, any whiskey over 100 proof (50% alcohol) is considered stump whiskey because of its strong intoxicating effect.
From the movie âLawlessâ
Forrest Bondurant (Tom Hardy): to beaten up deputies Now, you all oughta know better than to come around here when Hal's been on stump whiskey for a few days.
