hump yard

A railroad freight yard built on an incline (appears like a hump) where cars are pushed up a hill, and roll down the otherside, where switches and retarders are thrown to put them on the correct track using gravity, instead of fuel.

Inorder to sort these cars, we must shove them in the hump yard.

do not hump

A term used on the railroads for cars that are not supposed to be humped. (See "hump yard") Commonly seen on passenger cars and tank cars.
