The meaning of the name Oliver is "Descendant Of The Ancestor". The origin of the name Oliver is English. This is the culture in which the name originated, or in the case of a word, the language. Contrary to popular belief, Oliver is derived from the old Norse name Áleifr, literally meaning "ancestor's descendant".
