band parents

A group of very dedicated people who work tirelessly to help assist high school marching bands. These are usually parents of current or sometimes former band members, and they will often assist in all kinds of band-related activities, from helping with band camps to loading instruments on busses and selling concessions. They can also be found involved in fundraisers and trying to make sure their kid actually sells some band candy this year. Also sometimes known as band boosters, these individuals are often instrumental (no pun intended) to keeping a high school band on its feet.

The band parents helped unload the instrument bus, then they made sure all the band uniforms had been put back correctly. Finally, at 11:30 at night, they went home.

free running

A sport and art, started in the 1980s in France by bored teenagers, where a person vaults, climbs, and does acrobatic stunts off of objects in their path instead of merely running around them.

The newspaper recently ran an article about a guy who does free running.

altie newspaper

A newspaper or magazine that is a smaller alternative to more mainstream, "credible" papers. It's often local, providing inside dirt on things going on in a particular city or area. Sometimes, such as in the case of The Onion, it's published online (however, the Onion is satire as opposed to an actual news source). Some things reported in these papers are not taken seriously, but they often cover important stories bigger papers won't touch. Often liberal in nature, they will also often publish some awesome comics such as Tom Tommorow's "This Modern World" or Derf's "The City." However, these papers, are not meant for a family audience. While usually free, they pay for this by running a lot of sex ads and other inappropriate stuff.

"I wanted to find out about some local bands and read "The City", so I got a free copy of my local altie newspaper."

colorguard

A group of people, also known as a drill team or dance team, who add visual flair to a marching band. They are most often associated with flags, which they often march with and twirl. However, many groups also dance, and some schools' colorguards twirl other interesting objects such as rifles, chain flags, etc.
These groups also often wear fairly skintight or showy uniforms (but still in many cases modest compared to the cheerleaders), and they may wear a lot of makeup and glitter so that their faces are not washed out under the lights on a football field. These performers enhance the band's music with their routines and make halftime shows much more interesting.

1) -"hey, you're wearing a skirt, are you a cheerleader?"
-"No, I'm on the colorguard and it freakin' rocks!"
2) The colorguard and band performed at the halftime show.
3) -"Those band kids are such dorks!"
-"Better watch what you say, man. That girl over there is in colorguard and she'll kick your ass if she hears you diss her friends."

this modern world

An awesome comic strip drawn by artist Tom Tommorow that satirizes our government and other political aspects of life in the U.S.A. He uses characters drawn in a 50's style to poke fun at life today in... you guessed it, the modern world. It's published in a number of altie newspapers and online. (see www.thismodernworld.com for more info.)

"Yeah, I was reading This Modern World and it was awesome how they said Condoleeza Rice was really an alien! If only it were true..."

stud

2) a small earring with a rounded top often used for piercing and worn by both men and women.
3) a male animal desirable for breeding (like a racehorse)
4) a guy who is popular with the ladies and has no trouble getting laid, and who may also be attractive-looking, but not always. (often used jokingly, see example)
5) a "butch" lesbian

1) The belt had studs on it and looked really cool.
2) The guy had studs in both his ears- he'd just gotten them pierced a week ago, too.
3) After winning the race, the racehorse became a prime stud for breeding.
4) Scott is quite a stud around here, he can always get a date.
OR: (jokingly) "Yeah, there were so many desperate girls and so few guys at that party that Chad became a total stud."
5) -"Jenny is such a stud."
-"Dang, that's hot. I wish she dated guys."
