Retarded

An adjective that was originally just a synonym for slow. In the 20th century the word was used in the term mentally retarded, a broad term used to describe people with mental handicaps. Because of this, the word became strongly associated with mental disability. As time passed, people began using the word Retarded to describe people, places or things that they found dumb or unappealing. Later on, the use of the word became considered offensive or taboo by many people, because of it's association with mental disabilities.

1. The tempo of the music slows down at measure 80. Make sure that that section is retarded when you play it.

2. Gerald is mentally retarded, he needs extra help to acquire life skills.

3. You put a fork in the microwave? Are you retarded?

4. It's retarded that I have to pay sales taxes in Washington even though I am an Oregon Resident.
