A home cinema made out of spare parts found around the house. A true ghetto home cinema has one of the following characteristics:
-The rear speakers of the "surround system" are of different make than the front speakers (or worse, the front speakers are the TV's intergrated speakers).
-The "surround system" lacks a center or subwoofer channel, or both.
-The projector operates at a 4:3 format (like the ones used for powerpoint presentations). Unlike proper home cinema systems which have 16:9 projectors.
-Picture is provided via composite (yellow plug) cables.
-The pre-recorded material consists of VHS tapes, Divx files and single layer DVDs made with DVD shrink (proper home cinema's have dual layer DVDs, MKV files and Blurays)

To make a DVDRip, you need to copy the main movie of the DVD to your hard drive, and then re-encode it to reduce size. DVDRips are usually AVI files, with MPEG 4 ASP video and mp3 audio (such files are usually called "Divx" files). DVDRips are always standard definition, and some times even lower than that.
Since DVDRips use a video format that's superior to the one the source uses (MPEG 4 ASP vs MPEG 2 of the DVD), it's possible to dramatically reduce the size of the rip compared to the original.
If you are willing to compromise quality and detail, you can reduce the size even further, often reaching into such small sizes as 700MB (1/10 of the original), but quality will be rather low.
A good quality DVDrip of your usual hollywood movie is 1~1,2GB in size, while 700MB~800MB is a rip of rather poor quality.
DVDRips are arguably the no1 method of piracy and the easiest way to download a movie from the internet. Also, since DVDrips are Divx files, they can play on all Divx capable DVD players, making them an even bigger pain in the back for greedy hollywood studios.

To make a BDRip, you need to copy the main movie of a blu-ray disc to your hard drive, and then re-encode it to reduce size. BDRips are usually Matroska files, with MPEG 4 AVC video, high quality AAC audio, and possibly subtitles and chapters (this type of file is usually called a "DivxHD" file). BDRips always come in HD, aka 1280x720 resolution or above (MKV files in standard definition are not considered BDRips).
BDRips are the next thing after DVDrips (which are always standard def).
The problem is that, while DVDRips use a video format superior to the one the source uses (MPEG 4 ASP vs MPEG 2 of the DVD), which means it's possible to dramatically reduce the size of the rip compared to the original, BDRips use the same video format as Bluray (MPEG 4 AVC in both cases). This means it's not possible to reduce size that much, if you want to preserve the HD resolution and video quality.
Anyway, BDRips are several times better in terms of quality than any DVDrip. BDRips are also bigger in size. They usually come in two resolutions, 720p (4,35GB~6GB in size) and 800p (7,9GB~13GB in size, often called "1080p" vids).

-Friend: I hate DVDrips, we 'd better rent the DVD
-Me: This is a BDRip, and it has better quality than any DVDRip or DVD. Just watch and tell me.
-Friend: Wow, it's in HD!
