An anti-war book written by Dalton Trumbo sometime in the 1940s and also a movie made in the 70s. Joe Donham is a young man who is drafted into a war based on democracy. He survives the explosion of a mine which ultimately leaves Joe lifeless; he is blind, deaf, and without limbs. His caretakers and doctors do not think he is capable of feeling pain, dreaming, or thinking, all which he goes through. These are some of his thoughts:
"I don't know whether I am alive and dreaming or dead and remembering."
"How can you tell what's a dream and what's real if you can't even tell when you're awake and when you're asleep?"
