Witch Hunt

A search for something that isn’t real, or proven to be real.

Searching for something that will never be found because it does not exist.

Originally used in midieval times to search for people who were thought to be witches. “We’re going on a ‘witch hunt’”... But since we now know that witches are not real the term has evolved to mean to search for something not real.
