picking violets

Picking violets is part of the flower code for lesbians. The phrase comes from the famous poet Sappho of Lesbos (for whom the word lesbian was named) and it was thought that Sappho would give violets to the girl who she was wooing.

“all the violet tiaras,
braided rosebuds, dill and
crocus twined around your young neck” -Sappho

Picking violets:
Me: picked any violets lately?
Girl: No but maybe we can pick some together?

Me: (thinking) yay she’s gay!
