From "sponge bath" females in the Caribbean are expected to clean their privates before going to bed. Regardless of the circumstances--even when there is a hurricane, or some other natural disaster. It is expected that, although she does not have indoor plumbing, she must make provision for that obligatory "sponge"--such as collecting rain water.

Girls are trained very early on how to sponge. The focus is speed and efficiency. As a rite of passage are given their very own decorative plastic basins and are shown how to "sponge".

"Time to go and sponge, Mary."

"What happen-- you not sponging tonight? It's six o'clock..."
