ding

One is dinged when one is contacted by the NHS Covid Track-and-Trace app and told to self-isolate following exposure to someone with Covid. ‘Ding’ is onomatopoeic after the sound of a phone notification. Commonly ‘be / get dinged’.

I got dinged by Track and Trace, but I’ve got no idea how.

Commonly ‘be/get dinged /dɪŋd/. One is dinged when one is contacted by the NHS Track-and-Trace app and told to self-isolate following possible exposure to someone with Covid. ‘Ding’ is onomatopoeic after the sound of a smartphone notification.

(This usage is observed in Cambridge, UK, where this entry is written - for the record.)

I got dinged by the app and I’ve no idea why.
