linux

A stable alternative to Windows, used primarily on servers and workstations. A favorite of graphic artist, 3D animators, and programmers, as well as corporations that can't afford for their computers to crash. Runs programs such as Alias|Wavefront's Maya, SoftImage's XSI, Adobe Photoshop etc. extremely well, but has trouble running software designed solely for the Windows operating system such as games (duh). In other words, Linux is used mostly by professionals who need a stable platform to do work on, rather than for playing games.

I use Linux on my servers and workstations that are designed for Maya and Photoshop, and I use Windows on my gaming computers.

Linux

Linux is NOT an OS (Operating System). Linux is the actual kernel from which the platformed distribution runs and obtains directions. The Linux kernel is an open source system which falls under the GNU General Public license. In essence, Linux is a compressed, open source platform of UNIX. The actual OS's (distributions or flavors) are gentoo, red hat, unbuntu, slackware (Although very similar to straight UNIX), mandrake, arch, debian, mandriva, etc.

The Linux kernel was designed and constructed by Linus Torvalds to provide a free, open source kernel for all computer lovers.

i.e. Microsoft XP is an OS. Microsoft also has a kernel which makes it run. Linux is the actual kernel for distributions like S.u.S.E. etc.

1. Hey, do you use Linux?
- What?

2. Hey, do you use Linux?
- I love that OS
You're stupid.

3. Hey, do you use Linux?
- Yes, why yes I do.
Righto, Chap. Well done.

linux

A great OS that runs the only game a true gamer would ever play (counterstrike) fine and is much more stable. If you are tired of letting microsoft own your computer and tired of the utter lack of customizability that comes with winblowz, I recommend that you give this a shot. It is simple to learn I cannot believe anyone thinks it is complicated. If you dont feel like partitioning space on your comp to try it out, get a "live cd" of linux (such as knoppix or phlak) and just boot it up and take linux for a test drive.

I switched to linux 3 years ago. CS runs much better on my customized version of linux than it ever ran on my windows OS. I am so glad I found linux! Now I am the one controlling my comp!

Linux

Linux Is Not UniX
A UNIX clone written by Linus Torvalds so people can have a UNIX-like OS which has no AT&T code for which you need to pay royalties. Known sometimes as GNU/Linux. Morons complain about compiling their software when the reason is for the software to be cross-compatible.

Linux is in NO WAY an alternative to Windows. Windows is intended as a multimedia and gaming OS and Linux is designed for server machines. They are two VERY DIFFERENT operating systems.

Linux

The common name for any open-source Operating System running on the Unix Kernal.

Common linux distributions include Ubuntu, Redhat, SUSE and Fedora.

The advantages of Linux over Windows:
-faster boot/loading times.
-no need for anti-virus software
-free
-no bloatware, spyware or useless programs to slow your computer down.

The disadvantages of Linux over Windows:
-game makers and large software companies stick with Windows because of its market share.
-less users than windows (which is also advantageous in a way) means less people working on making it even better.
-often not user friendly (although Ubuntu is considered to be the most user-friendly version, and is very easy to get used to).

I just installed Linux on my laptop. So glad I'm rid of Windows Vista.

linux

A very stable operating system released under the JPL. Originally a spare time project by student Linus Torvalds, Linux has developed into a popular back-end and server operating system. Linux is beginning to make inroads on the desktop.
It is frequently maligned by Windows users because Linux actually requires some degree of intelligence to use.

"That new Linux server is much better than that old WinNT-based pile of crap we used to use!"
