punk rock

A style of music that originated in New York in the mid 1970s. Although many people claim to know the true origins of punk rock, few really do. Originally a movement of alienated youth, today it is used as a moniker to describe any horrible piece of trash that receives frequent rotation on FM radio. A word absolutely devoid of it's original meaning and virtually destroyed by the popular media.

Black Flack circa 1980 was the definition of a punk rock band; explosive and threatening. Blink 182 is the present definition of a punk band; safe and non-threatening.

punk rock

A wide genre of music. Often the cause of large arguments as to what bands actually fall into the genre.
Usually contains a strong political or personal message, but has evolved to include humour and personal emotions.

Quite often the term 'punk rock' is used to describe new, more poppy bands as opposed to the old school founders of the genre (who are known as simply 'punk').
Despite common belief, the genre does not include bands such as New Found Glory, Blink 182, Good Charlotte or Sum 41. All of whom are considered pop bands.

Man I saw the coolest punk rock band last night.

punk rock

A genre of rock that is more about the message than the music. Punk songs are usually, but not always, made up of 3 chords.

If you're not sure if a song is punk, listen to the lyrics. If they are not about standing up for something the artist believes in (ie: anti-censorship, anti-war, anti-racism, etc.) then it is NOT a punk song. Punk is about standing up and fighting for something you believe in. It has nothing to do with the image or the artist, or even how the melody of the song sounds.

Examples of punk bands:
Sex Pistols, Ramones, Clash, NOFX, Rancid, Bad Religion

Nonexamples of punk bands:
New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, MxPx, Ataris, Thursday

Wannabe: "Hey! I wear clothes from Hot Topic! I'm punk!"

Real punk: "No, you're a poser. Punk has nothing to do w/ the clothes you wear."

punk rock

1.) a type of music that speaks the truth so bluntly and loudly that most dislike to hear it.

To all those who are the people and to all those who believe and for those

who know a better world exists and can be achieved through new thoughts,

new ideas, music and politics not through religion, war, and social

clarity; to those who wish to break free from conformity, racism, facism,

prejudice, narrow-mindedness. We dedicate this

definition of punk rock to

those people.

Baby, I'm an Anarchist-Against Me!
Maria-Rage Against the Machine
Blood-Red White and Blue-Rise Against
To The World-Strike Anywhere
American Jesus-Bad Religion

For those of you who still think punk rock is dead after reading our definition, to you we say, you're not punk rock because if you were you would realize there is still punk rock, you're confusing a lot of music that would fall under an entirely different category than "punk rock" but is still delivering the same message but has been completly raped and mutilated by the media and by society.

Punk rock

Punk is some of the greatest music of all time in my opinion. Real punk consists of bands like Minor Threat, Civil Disobedience, Leftover Crack, Bad Brains, A Global Threat, and so much more. (Notice I didn't put the typical Ramones or Sex Pistols because 1. they're not even that great 2. they ain't got shit on most hardcore punk bands out there and 3. they're kind of overrated.) Anyone that wants to say bands like MXPX or Lagwagon (I usually call them pussy punk, but even calling them any kind of punk at all is just insulting to the real deals) are punk deserves to be shot in the back of the fucking head, seriously. Notice that bands like that have a simple band name probably with no meaning behind it and lyrics that appeal to kids 12 and under...douche bag pussies. Bands like Bad Religion and A Global Threat a great meaning behind the title as well as the lyrics that usually have to do with the fucked up society we live in today. People may tell me that punk is dead but you know what? Doesn't mean I still can't like it. AND a lot of old school punk bands are still making great music today, so FUCK YOU! =

Punks not dead, it just smells that way.
