cocktail socialist

Similar to the American limousine liberal, latte liberal, Australian chardonnay socialist and French "gauche caviar," this term is used to describe one who is both rich and a political leftist, particularly a social democrat.

John was a cocktail socialist. He indulged in expensive real estate, travel and fine wines, but drove a hybrid car with a Greenpeace bumper sticker.

Champagne Socialist

Billy Bragg, a folk-punk performer. Best known in England for espousing the virtues of being a working class man and then moving the fuck out of his blue collar 'hood in Essex asap. Certainly a fine musician, widely acclaimed for killer albums such as Back to Basics and his respectable tributes to Joe Strummer (of the only band that matters, the ClashTM), he is fond of "pontificating on a South London council estate when we all know he lives in a lovely big house in West Dorset".

GI Dave: OMG Billy Bragg! Dude, I'm your biggest fan!

SJ: OMG PLUS ME TOO!

GI Dave: You should come play at our school's music festival Culture Shock in April!

Billy Bragg: I would love to but unfortunately April is the month that I arbitrarily fire half of my waiting/serving staff at home and hire new servants that I can pay less. If Joe Strummer were alive I would recommend you to him because he squatted almost his whole life and definitely never lived in Dorset. However, he's dead so you'll probably have to go watch some totally unremarkable over-hyped hipster headliner for Culture Shock.

GI Dave: man, CL was totally right, you really are such a champagne socialist.

National Socialist

Many political parties in various contexts have referred to themselves as National Socialist parties. Because there is no clear definition of national socialism, the term has been used to mean very different things. Since the rise of German Nazism, which called itself "National Socialism", the term has been used in Europe and North America almost exclusively by political parties with racial nationalist views.

However, in other parts of the world, which had little contact with German Nazism, the term "National Socialism" is sometimes used by parties that define themselves as socialist and patriotic, without being racist. In addition, the term was also used by non-racist groups in Europe before the rise of Nazism.

Socialist Organiser

Now-defunct socialist newspaper (NOT an organisation) run during the 1980s by the Socialist Campaign for a Labour Victory (SCLV). Neither the paper nor SCLV exists at present, both having been dissolved in the late 80s.

This does not stop the rightwing in NUS treating Socialist Organiser (aka "S.O.") as the secret conspiracy behind every setback and every instance of opposition they face. The supposed organisation is supposed to have covert arrangements to produce such outcomes, and every left-leaning campaign, however broad-based, is accused of being a "front" for "S.O.". Basically, the NUS rightwing's pet version of Illuminati, cabal or ZOG.

Also known as 'the trots'.

Socialist Organiser was never what the NUS rightwing now claim it is, and in any case it's been defunct for 20 years. Get over it, you wankers!

socialist butterfly

A person who is politically active not through deep convictions but as an adjunct or aid to their social life.

"Where were you today Becky?"
"I went to a protest with Tom, he's so cute!"
"What were you protesting?"
"Um, I dunno, something important!"
"You're such a socialist butterfly!"

Democratic Socialist

Somebody who advocates for the installment of a socialist economy through democratic means (i.e. elections etc.)

The prime characteristics of such an economic system include:
- partial or complete governmental control over the means of production.
- a planned economy, in which the state determines how much of a certain product is made to combat wastefulness

Democratic socialists often also support:
- expanding social benefits, such as health care
- implementing or strengthening workers rights to participate in business decisions.
- more power to the trade unions
- setting a limit for wage gaps, e.g. top managers can't earn more than 20 times as much as the worker with the lowest wage

A: Bernie Sanders is a democratic Socialist.

B: Democratic socialism? Pff. That's an oxymoron! Socialism leads to autocracy and gulags!

B: I'm sorry, but you seem to be stuck in the fifties with all of the cold war propaganda.
