Nu Metal

Nu Metal is a fusion genre that mixes metal with funk, hip hop, and sometimes Industrial. They're often groove-based and they're guitar and bass is usually tuned very low.

In the late 90s Korn's "Follow The Leader" had gained a massive amount of popular and featured the hit singles Freak on a Leash and Got The Life. This album opened the door for many Nu Metal and Rap Metal bands to become popular. In 1999 Korn's Issues, Limp Bizkit's Significant Other, and Kid Rock's Devil Without a Cause were extremely succesful.

2000 and 2001 was possibly the best time for Nu Metal with Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Deftones, System of a Down, Disturbed, Godsmack, Staind, Drowning Pool, Static-X, Mudvayne, P.O.D., Mushroomhead, Papa Roach, Soulfly, and Linkin Park (who's debut was the highest selling album of 2001) all having succesful albums.
2002 showed signs of Nu Metal declining. Korn's long awaited 5th album Untouchables and Papa Roach's Lovehatetragedy both sold less than expected.
Some of the reasons behind this is MTV started focusing more on Pop-Punk and Emo-Pop in 2002.
Even though many of these bands have gained criticism Deftones and System of a Down are highly respected among critics and rock fans in general.

Korn are often considered the pioneers of this style of music.

Dan - What is Nu Metal
John - It's basically grooved-based, aggresive modern hard rock. Despite popular belief you do not have to have some sort of rap/hip hop influence to be Nu Metal.

Gothenburg Metal

A type of death metal popularized by Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, and At The Gates. Defined from Gothenburg, a city of Sweden. Many melodic death metal bands have been discovered since the popularization of this sound.

Ford: Hey! Gothenburg metal is the greatest music in the world.

Harrison: Hell yeah. Too bad kids today still listen to emo-fag "music". And some blacks still hypnotize children with their cRAP, Shit-hop, and their hell of a lifestyle.

Metal God

A revered and highly respected musician within the Metal genre. Metal Gods are often classically trained and will sometimes listen to classical composers like Beethoven and Wagner almost as much as they listen to their favorite bands. They usually play more than one instrument and have an almost instinctive understanding of music theory.

Within the Metal genre, God-status is earned through hard work, talent and skill. However, the status of a musician is based on personal preference of the listener. Where one person may say a particular artist is a god, someone else probably disagrees.

The band's new album will blow you away...These guys are total Metal Gods!

black metal

Black metal is a sub genre of metal that is associated with, most prominantley, Norwegian and other Scandinavian countries. This type of music includes blasting drum beats from double bass drums and heavy guitar picking, known as tremelo picking. The singing is usually growling and somewhat high pitched. Bands such as Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor and Immortal made Black metal into what it is known as today although Venom sort of started it. Now, bands like Satyricon, Carpathian Forest, Gorgoroth, Burzum, Borknagar, Finntroll, Dimmu Borgir, Tulus and 1349 are well known amongst the fans of this music. The history of black metal dates back to the early to mid 80's. But the shit really hit the fan in the early 90's when church burnings and killings became a friday ritual over in Norway. One of the members of Burzum, the singer Varg, was locked up after brutally murduring another musician. Burzum's last album before his inconvinient sentence was Filosofem which in my opinion is a great album. Another violent metal occurence is when the singer from Mayhem took his own life. "Death", as he was called, blew out his brains with a shotgun. The members of the band decided to make the picture of him dead, the next cd cover. Although the cover defines the meaning of black metal, it was banned and they were forced to change it. Some other interesting facts: Drummer from Mayhem, Hellhammer, plays for Dimmu Borgir. Drummer for Satyricon, Frost, also plays for 1349. The world of Black metal is fasinating and violent but the music speaks for itself. I have a countless # of black metal albums and I love them all. Buy a couple and give it a good listen or two.

Black metal is a sub genre of metal and includes fast drums and rampaging guitars that will eat you alive.

Nu Metal

Sucks, lacking instrumentally and in musicality.

If you listen to Slipknot, Korn, or System of a Down, Please find better music, other than Nu metal.

Power metal

the only true heavy metal (some may consider it to be a subgenre, but power metal is what heavy metal would be today if all the crap, a.k.a. death/black/nu etc., was removed from existence) which usually includes medieval/fantasy lyrical themes and very complex musicianship.

King Diamond is power metal. Whomever says otherwise is grossly misinformed and apparently deaf.
