pop punk

as people have already pointed out, this can't really exist because it's an oxymoron, although there are some bands that have been labelled as pop punk.
a real pop punk band is the Buzzcocks.
all the other modern day bands like good charlotte and sum41 and avril lavigne are shite. get over it.

hippie punk

hippie punk
To start both hippies and punks don't want to conform to the society. But hippies and punks mainly believe on the same aspects of government and social standings. Many things can differ to make up the "hippie punk". Punks belive in Anti-authoritarianism, Non-conformity, Anti-militarism, Anti-capitalism, Anti-nationalism, Environmentalism, Vegetarianism and animal rights. Hippies believe in Environmentalism, animal rights, Non-conformity and Anti-militarism (PEACE).With the "hippie punk" it is a cross between the more peaceful side of the hippie trying to get the more aggressive message of the punks out to the world and get something done about it.
The real issue behind the Punk movement is freedom of thought, or thinking for one's self. Non-conformity is then the result of a punk.
Hippies have similar ideas of thinking for themselves,Non-conformity and peace to get their message across.

Both being a punk and being a hippie is a state of mind and a "hippie punk" brings both of these minds together in a mix of both of the concepts.

an example of a hippie punk is that they believe in peace but beleives in all the other punk ideas.

pop punk

Pop punk is a subgenre of punk played simplistically, but with good melodies. Lyrics have catchy hooks and are usually about love, alienaton, feeling insecure, or whatever the hell random thing the writer wants (Da Stike by Millencolin is about bowling).

Unfortunately, the genre is being ruined by MTV who are telling 14 year old girls that anyone who wears black and has emo-hair is punk. All of these bands are just posers who play watered down versions of the genre for personal gain.

Real pop punk is real punk. In fact, in a way, is more punk than many others because they don't try too hard to be punk. Good pop punk bands will write songs that are the antidote for heartache. Bad pop punk bands make heartache even worse (see emo)

Pop punk: Millencolin (personal fave), Screeching Weasel, Descendants, NOFX, Lagwagon, Rancid, Buzzcocks, Ramones, Blink 182 (Dude Ranch), Green Day (Kerplunk-Nimrod)

Shit: Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, All American Rejects, Sum 41 (even though I'll admit I like a couple of their songs)

Really really really really not pop punk: Avril Lavigne

frat punk

An adjective used to describe a fraternity brother who constantly talks about played out punk/emo/indie music while sporting "yellowcard", "brand new" or "taking back sunday" t-shirt or hoodies. Designer brands include Hurley and Volcom bought exclusively at their local Pacific Sunwear. Usually of an upper middle class upbringing the frat punk will typically have over 400 friends on the facebook due to their overexposure that the Greek scene provides. Will explain in great detail the game of 100 cup they played the other night and how "sick" it was.

Hey Jim was wearing a sideways Hurley hat in the pictures from his mixer last night. He's so frat punk.
