There is much confusion about this term. It appears to have two meanings:
1: Same as Gothic Metal. People often call gothic metal "goth metal" because they assume the two words are interchangable, or because they assume that because it's called "gothic" it must have something to do with goth. It does not.
2: Any metal that so-called goths (usually wannabe goths) listen to. Could be anything from Nightwish to Slipknot depending on the whim of the speaker. This is a ficticous genre, ie there is no such thing as "goth metal"!! Gothic Rock and Metal are POLLS APART!!!
There is no genre of goth music which sounds anthing like metal. Period. Although there is no reason a goth cannot have a varied music taste, there is no connection whatsoever between goth and any form of metal.

When something "turns nu-metal", it is completely bastardized and no longer as good as it used to be.
Originates from the fact that many people have negative opinions about nu-metal, and think that metal is no longer as good as it used to be.
"Man, this guy used to be the best player on the football team, but now he sucks! He totally turned nu-metal."

A subgenre of Rock music, closely related to Hard Rock. It was developed during the 70's by bands such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin (although they stuck to their blues and folk roots, and weren't completely Heavy Metal), Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep - even some prog-rock bands experimented with heavier sounds, Heavy Metal sounds. It is said that the first Heavy Metal band was Black Sabbath - I can boldly say they were the first BRITISH Metal band, and Blue Cheer the first American Metal band.
The music is characterized for it's technical and heavy riffs, long songs, and solos played with virtuosity. Lyrics are very varied (contrary to what many people think, they don't all have "satanic" or evil lyrics, and hateful lyrics) - they range from love and sex, through war and nuclear holocaust to fantasy and dragons.
Heavy metal is one of the most misunderstood genres of music in our day. Rather unfortunately, this is often a result of brazen ignorance about the subject, brought about by certain sectors of the media, society, and listeners themselves.
Most notable bands are: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Dio, Manowar, Stratovarius, Deep Purple, Dokken, Judas Priest

The late 90's answer to the grunge fallout, Nu Metal gave hormonal teenagers something new to latch onto and call their own.
The truth is, this is nothing new at all. Many a Nu Metal kid will deride and defemate Hair Metal and other forms of popularized 80's trash music as passe and forgetable. Not understanding that their $9.99 pieces of Best Buy chugga-chugga riffing pilfered from hardcore's rotted corpse and plunged up their mainstream-loving ass is nothing spectacular in itself.
A fad is a trend that is not a revolution. Of course, telling people below the age of 18 this is impossible. As shown on this site alone, many fans of this aural equivalent to AIDS believe it is an "evolution" or "new wave" to heavy metal and music in general.
Wrong. The Gothenburg sound is an evoltion. The use of atmospheric chording is an evolution. What Nu Metal provides is a package in which to throw all hook-laden parts of various forms of metal and other genres of music. Then it is shipped off to malls and music video outlets everywhere for consumption by impresionable idiots in phat pants.
