When you comment on a facebook or reddit thread (usually of political discourse) with a vicious and worthless comment that is only meant to make the rest of the commenters angry for the sake of being a dick. You just say your comment and leave, with no intention of engaging in the conversation.
Like farting in an elevator of strangers as you walk off at your floor, leaving them to deal with your ugly stench.
i.e. When a Hillary person randomly goes on a Bernie person's facebook page thoughtfully discussing healthcare news and leaves a comment like, "You are all a bunch of socialists and you're the reason we have Trump!", or a conservative just goes on a liberals' page and calls them all a bunch of "libtards" and neither respond to questions or comments, that's like farting in an elevator.
I promote thoughtful political discourse on this thread with articulate responses. No farting in this elevator.
The Reddit subgroup "ChangeMyView" has the best rules for keeping people from farting in an elevator.

...you follow the elevator in a certain order. Starting on the first floor, then up to the fourth, down to the second, then up to the sixth, back down to the second, and after the that, down at the 5th ...and then back to the First. The game us filled with all kinds of other specific details.

The letdown experienced after standing in an elevator, doors almost closed, and someone activates the sensor in a last minute attempt to board by pressing the outside button or waving a hand between the doors.
I was in a full elevator and experienced Elevation Cessation when Harold did a mean karate chop between the doors, trying to board.

When someone uses means of climbing their way to the top that other would deem cheap or unfair. Usually (but not always) refers to online games with a ladder ranking system. People who "take the elevator instead of the ladder" will use powerful characters, weapons, or tactics that they know all too well are soon to receive the ban hammer or their bullshitly high power to skill ratio in order to get as high up on the ranking ladder for the game as they can, usually for fame, respect, and power in the community.
David took the elevator instead of the corporate ladder to become VP of his company by brown nosing the boss.
Many of the newer or less experienced players on Pokemon Showdown were taking the elevator instead of the ladder by abusing the fuck out of Mega Gengar before its imminent ban from OU. The ladder gets reset after each ban anyways, so the joke is on them.
