by out

verb - to by out, colloquialism - to engage in a structured ritual for the purpose of determining who will get the first turn or take an advantaged play in a game or sport. Examples of by out alternatives might be doing a paper/rock/scissors play, rolling dice, flipping a coin, or putting alternative hands atop each others on an inverted baseball bat.

Example situation. A kid approaches a group about to start a game of baseball and, to see whether they've actually begun yet, might ask, "Did you by out yet?" Winner of the bying out gets to choose whether his or her team bats or fields first. if they already did the by out then it's too late to join the game unless both teams are okay with it.
