Spiritual Sucessor

A spiritual successor is a product which is similar to (or directly inspired by) another previous work, but (unlike a traditional prequel or sequel) does not explicitly continue the product line or media franchise of its predecessor, and is thus only a successor "in spirit" Spiritual successors often have similar themes and styles to their source material, but are generally a distinct intellectual property.

In fiction, the term generally refers to a work by a creator which shares similarities to one of their earlier works, but is set in a different continuity, and features distinct characters and settings. Such works may arise when licensing issues prevent a creator from releasing a direct sequel using the same copyrighted characters and names as the original.

The term is also used more broadly to describe a pastiche work, which intentionally evokes similarities to pay homage to other influential works, but is also distinct enough to avoid copyright infringement.

spiritus mundi

Literally, the spirit of the world or analytically - the morals and mores of the times.

The attitude towards sex as recreation is part of the spiritus mundi of the modern world, often blamed by religionists for the prevalence of abortion and contraception.

Spiritual but not religious

A person who is not into any particular traditional church denomination. They may gather different ideas from religions and craft their own theology that explains their life experiences or they may follow more of a mystical approach (meditation, yoga, earth medicine) to find their truth. They may feel a connection in nature (or guitar playing, or eating yogurt or having sex) that transcends the ego. They usually reject anything that comes across as dogma, (i.e. you must believe this to get into my group) and usually have a broad definition of what they consider "the Divine" to be.

People who believe in some kind of Divinity, but don't want to be associated with a particular church or theology, would call themselves spiritual but not religious.

Regardless of this you can tell instantly that they are completely fucked up.

That chick from Boulder offered to give me a free colonic if I share my inner child with her, but she scares the shit out of me.. she's a complete spiritual ego.
