While the Eclipse was going on Guts cut off his arm to prevent the "new" Griffith from raping Casca, which sadly still happened, while fighting monsters one of them stabbed his eye, making him loose that eye. He later replaced his lost arm with a mechanical arm/hand cannon. His goal is to get revenge and to protect casca.
As you see Guts is one hell of an edgy badass.
