emo is an abbreviation not for the word 'emotional' but 'emotive'. Emotive music is a sub-genre of rock popular among middle class teenagers with emotional difficulties. Normally the vocalist does not in fact sing, he/she whines instead. A lot of emo fans do in fact like other rock sub-genres, however these do not directly address their emotional difficulties. Being an emo fan is a bit like going to an alcoholics anonymous class-you just go to a gig, cry/worry etc, find another person in the same boat, tell them everything will be alright, they tell you everything will work out fine, you get reassured then you stop crying/worrying and the gig ends.
The names of emo bands more often than not say it all.
Me:Hey man have you heard that metallica are headlining download this year? That's fuckin awesome, I'm getting my ticket tonight.
Emo fan: Yeah I heard. I dunno, metallica are a bit too aggressive for me. Whenever I hear them I wonder whether I'll ever be emotionally strong enough to make that sort of music.
Me: Metallica have sold around 100 MILLION albums worldwide. That's more than the whole emo genre. Unlucky man.

Okay, I've read through these stupid definitions on here for emo, and they're all WRONG.
I am an emo, so I figured this would be the best way for you numbskulls to get it through your minds. "Emo" IS short for "emotional". To be emo, you have to listen to the music, i.e. My Chemical Romance, Aiden, Underoath, etc, etc wear the clothes, i.e. skinny jeans, studs, etc, etc and have the personality. Now, personality is the biggie here. An emo personality is not always depressing, oh, and hint hint, EMO'S. DO. NOT. HAVE. TO. CUT. Emo's do, however, need to be a bit shy, poetic, and generally pretty intelligent. Emo's are also usually very, very nice people. Most of them, now I say most, not all, understand hurt. Generally emo's are shunned from society, but they're always willing to talk to someone. Emo's are sensitive, and only want their thoughts to be heard. Emo's do not always cut, are not always depressed, don't wear just black, and aren't freaks. They're people.

Simmering_emotions: I know. I've been a bit stressed lately. How are you?
PoeticXpoison: I've been okay. Got a few new CD's, couple T-shirts, you know.
Simmering_emotions: That's great. You know, I think posers have been multiplying at school.
PoeticXpoison: What makes you say that?
Simmering_emotions: The fact that random preps are suddenly dressing in all black, wearing a ton of studs, writting horrid poetry, and slitting their wrists.
PoeticXpoison: How pointless. I wish they would realize that you don't have to hurt yourself...
Simmering_emotions: Same here.
PoeticXpoison: Hey, do you want to come over here later? We can listen to the new Panic CD.
Simmering_emotions: Sounds great. See you around...five?

Emo, short for Emotional. Pretty much your definition right there. A whole bunch of sorrow filled people, who listen to downtrodden music which lyrics usually consist of groans and moans of past relationships that went wrong and they take there pain to the extreme. Typically "cutters" or, people who cut themselves when they are upset to release their emotional pain (which is very unhealthy by the way.) Majority of Emo's are homo/bi-sexual. Usually "Punks" do not get along with them. ("Indie sux, hard-line sux, EMO SUX, you suck!"-Antiflag)
Emo bands include, but are not limited to: my chemical romance, the used, and taking back sunday.

Usually wearing tight black skinny jeans, skinny tshirts or band tshirts,studded belts,converse style shoes, usually has dyed black/brown straight hair, wears lots of jewellrey sweatbands/bangles to cover up cut wrists, will cut themselves, be depressed most of the time, shy, hates themselves, want to kill themselves, listens to my chemical romance, panic! at the disco, taking back sunday, lostprophets, 30 seconds to mars, funeral for a friend etc. basically me!

extreme emo-ness. some one who displays great powers of being weird and sentimental about everything. i.e. chick flicks and funny clothing styles

Emo=gay. Prove me wrong emos, prove me wrong. If you can't, or don't want to, go cut yourself. You know you want to, I hear emos find it fun. Remember kiddies, suicide is funny to a point, so grow up, get out of your sister's pants and grow some balls.
Dashboard Confessionals are openly gay. Emo bands are all openly gay. You're openly gay. If you don't think you're gay then; you may not be gay, but your boyfriend is.
