A classification used for a wide range of alternative rock acts, some of which have metal roots, some of which have rap elements, and some of which are really hard rock. This term was used by the media to define these acts back when they first started coming out after the alternative craze so they could be classified in the same genre, even though they don't really sound much alike. In reality, there is no such genre as nu metal, as every band that could be said to be in this genre really belongs to another. For example, Linkin Park is rap metal or rapcore (and really their latest stuff is just rock) while Disturbed is more Alternative Metal.
Metalheads will often complain about how much nu metal sucks but they really shouldn't because there is no such genre. Better stick to hating individual bands.
If you think Linkin Park and Disturbed are both nu metal, you're fucking insane.

Okay, here is the deal with nu-metal: it is a new genre of rock/metal. When you think about it, what is new about it? There have been plenty of people making metal and rock since the 80's. Most metal and rock has been built off of that.
Most bands marketed as nu-metal aren't really true heavy metal anyway.
Look at me...I'm cool because I listen to nu-metal.
Shut the fuck up and listen to some real shit, like Children of Bodom.

The greatest rock, ever. Actually had talent unlike that shit called grunge. Hair metal was all about bangin' brauds, drinkin, makin' alot of money, having a great time, kicking ass, having fun and rockin'! Then that loser Cobain ruined it, and killed himself because he's a loser. Fuck Seattle. No, they didn't kill hair metal at all retards, hair metal was kickin' ass since '81 and decided to take a little break in '92, and are now back, kickin' ass again! No grunge band can ever comeback. Motley Crue is the greatest.
Hair metal has been crowned the new king!

A genre of new age metal that began in the late 1990's with bands like Slipknot and Killswitch Engaged. It infuses Punk and Extreme Metal to create a strong, yet complex rhythm. It differs from Punk Metal by putting emphasis on the breakdown portion of the song, and often invoke a more depressed and somewhat hopeless feeling. Some other modern examples include Attack Attack, Underoath, Atreyu, Trivium, All That Remains, and many more.

Hair metal, to sum it up, is an AWESOME genre of music. Hair metal is not exactly metal, though the musicianship has some simillarities. However, as opposed to black metal and death metal, the lyrics tend to be more upbeat and focused on "sex, drugs, and rock n' roll," as opposed to death and other gloomy, borderline Satanic lyrics, and unlike speed metal the musicianship is more intricate (listen to the guitar part for "Sweet Child O' Mine"). Hair metal actually is closer to the classic rock of the rolling stones and other bands like them than anything else
Here's a quick fact for you: Grunge did NOT kill hair metal. Far from it. Hair metal competed with grunge briefly, and then Kurt Cobain killed himself. Grunge has since then lost lots of it's popularity (don't even TRY comparing Hole or even Pearl Jam, a pretty decent band, to Nirvana). And I, and lots of people I know, like both genres.
Hair metal is disliked by hipsters today, who seem to find it's huge popularity proof that it is "corporate." Fine. You go on listening to belle and sebastian and le tigre, and we'll see who people listen to ten years from now and who is residing in the "where are they now" files. Listen to the guitar playing of Eddie Van Halen and Slash and try saying indie rockers are more talented.
Besides lyrics focused on fun and sex, hair metal has gotten political sometimes. For example, listen to twisted sister's song "we're not gonna take it."
Must hear hair metal bands are:
guns n' roses
the motley crue
bon jovi
van halen
poison
whitesnake
twisted sister

A musical genre inspired by death metal and heavy metal, and pioneered by sucky-ass bands like Venom.
Generally split up into several subgenres like Depressive black metal, Raw black metal, Blackened death metal, Drone metal and Pure black metal.
Depressive black metal tends to derive influence from ambience and suicide, with bands like Xasthur, Burzum, Hate Forest and Be Persecuted, who tend to structure their songs around misanthropy and depression.
Raw black metal was formed as a bulwark against recent black metal trends, which threaten to make it a mainstream genre. Vlad Tepes, Grand Belial's Key and Peste Noire are two of the major bands of this subgenre, which emphasizes purposely low production quality to keep the music from ever being able to be mainstream.
Blackened death metal is a fusion subgenre of death and black metal, with bands like Behemoth which mix traditional death metal style with lyrics and titles from black metal, typically.
Drone metal, with bands such as Sunno ))) and Boris tends to be more ambient than black, wich a mix of antireligious lyrics/titles and purely instrumental, paganistic form.
Pure black metal, (which is becoming rarer as the genre approaches mainstream quality,) with bands like Nargaroth and Marduk, tends to have stereotypically antichristian/ antireligious titles and lyrics, as well as a structure exceeding death metal in intensity. Most early black metal falls into this category, but most early black metal could also pass as raw black metal as well.
