A place where souls go and wait to be judged by St. Peter. Think of it as a waiting room, or a personal realm to roam in until called.
Ex: Beetlejuice waiting for his number to be called.
A lot of times spirits/souls get lost or distracted on the way to the light and get stuck .
Just like the soldiers of the Civil War they are doomed to live their entire afterlife in an endless loop for all eternity.
Some were afraid of GOD or not religious enough, or came from families that didn't practice.
In Mexican Culture.....like CoCo....if you don't have family prayers to remember you that alone will keep your soul bounded to Earth.
Souls/Spirits need prayers and guides to help them to the light.
The lost soldiers are doomed to be in Purgatory if someone does light a candle for them to find their way to GOD.
A bar you go to on a Sunday morning after a three day bender.
I'm in purgatory right now, i had a long weekend of drinking.
It's that place between life and death, depending upon how quickly you die is how long you stay in there. It is where you are between lives and can see the future and are still in the past. Just waiting to pass into the future, but you want to hold on to the Past.
My grandma was in purgatory for about a week before she passed on. She could see us hear us and correspond with us, yet she could see here and correspond with those that had passed before her. She was in between worlds, just waiting for everyone here on Earth to be okay for her to pass on. And when she did, there was no communication with us, it was just the afterlife. I saw her talking to her husband, who had past 3 years prior. I heard her talking to my father who had passed 23 years prior. She was in between worlds, and she didn't know where she belonged. It just took the final cousin coming home to say goodbye before she could truly leave us and pass on.

The act of being forbidden to receive food made by a coworker because you were being rude.
“Oh, you want to say something rude, well now you’re in food purgatory.”
That point of waiting after round one for your penile facilities to return for round two.
Hold on a minute. I’m in penile purgatory!
