Inappropriate Affect Police

A sardonic term for clinical psychologists who have, somewhere along the line, been made the arbiters of whether or not an expression of emotion is appropriate in any given situation.

I have a brilliant idea, let’s make some doctoral degreed wacka-wackas into the world’s foremost Inappropriate Affect Police!

Public display of affection

Couples operate in public areas, and they display affection such as holding hands, kissing etc. They do this to rub it in single people's faces that they don't have a boyfriend/girlfriend.

affective shift hypothesis

Haselton, M. G. & Buss, D. M. (2001). Emotional reactions following first-time sexual intercourse: The affective shift hypothesis. Personal Relationships, 8, 357-369.
Abstract: This article develops the Affective Shift Hypothesis, which suggests that women experience positive affective shifts following first-time intercourse as a means to facilitate a longer-term, more committed relationship. The hypothesis predicts a negative affective shift in men who pursue a short-term mating strategy; this shift is hypothesized to function to curtail commitment by motivating the man to terminate the relationship.

177 Ss in Study 1 documented sex differences predicted by the affective shift hypothesis. 203 Ss in Study 2, using a somewhat different methodology involving reports of presex and postsex feelings, found that men with high numbers of sex partners, but not men with low numbers of partners, experienced a decrease in their partner's physical and sexual attractiveness following first-time sexual intercourse. In contrast, women, more than men, experienced increases in feelings of love and commitment following first-time sex.

Bipolar affective disorder

A serious mental illness marked by violent and wild oscillations between extreme euphoria or irritability (mania) and deep depression. Although it is technically classified as a mood disorder, it is one of the few psychiatric conditions in which psychosis occurs; it is usually associated with severe manic states but profound depression may also cause delusions and hallucinations to emerge. The psychotic features are usually mood-congruent, e.g., believing oneself to be Jesus Christ and Lucifer for mania and depression respectively. It's an illness of extreme opposites in mood, thinking and energy levels and a severe mental disorder that, at least in its classic form, goes infinitely beyond what mentally healthy people experience and most certainly not to be trivialised. It is also worth noting that the mood swings associated with this disease are sustained and typically last weeks or months, years in the most extreme cases. Ultra-ultra rapid cycling (extreme mood shifts in a day) is exceedingly rare.

Bipolar affective disorder is a severe mental illness that in its most acute form is potentially worse than schizophrenia.

public displays of affection

Romantic body language and/or
passionate physical interaction between lovers in full public view. When over-used or too graphic, can be indicative of an insecure couple in an unstable relationship. PDA exhibitionism is used by many couples to prove their love to onlookers, and to elicit envy.

"Look at those two douchebags and their tacky public displays of affection, playing tonsil hockey over there like a couple of ferrets in heat. Get a room!
