A furry is a person who has an extreme interest in animals that have some human characteristics. They are usually found around petting zoos, pride conventions, furcons, around children or in their parent's basement.
There are two sub-categories: Furry and Furfag.
A furry simply likes those human-like animals and talks about the a lot.
A Furfag is a Furry who at least owns a fursuit, a costume of an animal. They are found at orgies, furcons, at a not supervised petting zoo and on Patreon asking for animal pornography for 10-500$.
Some of them are paedophiles and also ask on Patreon for "Cubs", a term for infant animals like puppies, kittens, etc.
Example 1:
Person: "Hey, wanna go to the petting zoo?"
Furry: "Yes! I love these animals!"
Example 2:
Person: "Wanna go to the petting zoo?"
Furfag: "Nah I already had an orgy today."

A person that shows interest (some to a lot) in anthropomorphic animals, or "anthro" animals, meaning human-like. There's been a lot of speculation that all furries are sex-crazed maniacs. This is not true. While there are people like that out there (about 1/10th of the fandom), this cannot be proven, as how diverse human personalities are. A lot of furries like to draw and create art. Others create or wear fursuits, write stories/poetry, or just like to hang out with other furries. All (Or a lot of) furries have their own furry persona, or "fursona," which could vary from a fox or dog, to a dragon or lizard. Some fursonas are pokemon or digimon. What you call those kinds of furs would be "poke-furs," or "digi-furs."
There are over 40 annual furry conventions worldwide, or "furcons," the largest being "Anthrocon," in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There, furries meet up and do things like browse art, hold charity auctions (sometimes), create art, crafts, music, or literature, and play video games (Just to name a few. Depending on which convention, they might have different things on offer).
Most furries just like to have fun, and that's what the fandom's about (Well, that and anthropomorphic characters).

A furry is someone who thinks anthropomorphic animals are cool. Meaning animals that walk on two legs like we do and dress in normal clothing. Note that just because you like wearing a fursuit doesn't make you a furry. Being a furry means this is who you want to be and who you are. It's means doing furry art, charity, going to conventions, and just doing it for fun!

Basically, "furry" is the name of the fandom around anthropomorphic animals. Just as fans of Doctor Who are called Whovians, it's just a name for a group of people.
"So Jamie really likes Zootopia, huh?"
