Ideally, a style of music in which a small group of informed and active people get together and produce a raw, simplistic, chord-driven sound to back up lyrics that expose problems in the world and usually incite anger and energy.
If done wrong, however, it results in a bunch of freaks with dyed hair banging away on guitars and yammering about American idiots.
Punk's not dead
It just deserves to die
When it becomes another stale cartoon
A close-minded, self-centered social club
Ideas don't matter, it's who you know -Dead Kennedys

Punk is a lifestyle. the ramones did not start punk rock they simply lived it. No one started punk it was picked up. In this day and age there are still punks but there are just as many posers.
Many punks express their views through music known as "good ass shit" so pick up a fucking circle jerks or germs album and get out your fashionable fuckin world....live a little
"Hey look at that kid kickin the shit out of that cop, now hes a punk!"

Punk is not easy to describe. It is people who want to be themselves and rebel against anything that is oppressing them. The music is such things like Caustic Christ and MC5. Not Green Day and Blink 182. Punk is not about your ex-girlfriend. That's called emo. Punk is about being an individual. But not even that anymore because the people classified as punk nowadays all look alike with they're highlighter colored hair, and fucked up clothes. And their fucking mohawks. Don't go for the cool look. Go for something that would make everyone stare. Not what every other punk wears.
"You ain't hardcore 'cause you spike your hair when a jock still lives inside your head"

punk is not hard, punk is not soft, punk is expression, if I want to listen to what I want to cause I feel it defines my persona and dont follow what everyone follows for the sake of meeting the norm, I am a punk, if I wear what I want because it defines me and doest try to be like everyone else to be "cool" I am a punk, if I do what ever the fuck I want to do, I am a punk, are you?

Was a movement started in the 70s by bands like the Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, Casualties, Generation X, Mc5, Iggy and The Stooges etc. It was started in New York and made it's way to the UK around the year of 1975. It is now being ruined by bands like Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance etc. These people are more focused on looking the part than on the music and message that comes along with it. Maybe if they chilled out for awhile and were themselves they could actually be put into a position to put out an actual punk album. Other people probably wont agree with me but I Think Sum41 is a pretty decent "punk" band. Listen to the lyrics to Fat Lip and dare not to call them punk. Anyways, the stereotyped style includes things like
- Mohawks
- Multi-colored hair
- Tight jeans or ripped jeans
- Studded belts
- Peireced body parts
- Tattoos
You don't even have to look the part to be punk you just have to like the music and have the signature attitude,
- Defiant
- Politcally outspoken
- Anti-establishment
other traits I cannot think of.
The Runaways were a great punk band, but are never credited for it.
