Steering Wheel Holder is a term that appeared in the Trucking Industry shortly after the automatic trucks started making a name for themselves. Traditionally, all semi-trucks have been manual, which means the driver would keep one hand on the wheel and one hand on the shifter. Opposite of manual, automatics allow the driver to keep both hands on the wheel all the time, hence the term: Steering Wheel Holder.
In most cases, the term is used as an insult toward drivers of automatic trucks who may be making a mistake or rash decision and are seen as lesser than their manual driving brethren.
